As part of Virtual GESSS where students will be presenting their science during Earth Science week (October 11 - 17), the GSA is hosting a pre-symposium webinars about using social media to an Earth Scientist's advantage and how to improve your online presentations.

We especially encourage potential GESSS and AESC participants to join as there will be lots of tips about how to promote your talks and posters through social media.

Following your registration, you will be sent a link to attend the webinar in Zoom on the day of the presentation.

Webinar 1: Promoting on Social Media!!

Thu 10 September 12:30pm AEST, 12.00pm ACST (Adelaide), 10.30am AWST (Perth)

Dr Verity Normington will be hosting this webinar using her experience as a 2019-2020 Superstar of STEM and the social media manager of the AGCC 2018 to guide you through how to use social media to your advantage. Verity is also an Executive Councillor for the GSA and the Chair of the ACT-Division. Verity has a keen interest using science communication to better explain geology to the public.

The webinar will aim to answer some of these questions:

  • What makes people follow you on social media?

  • How important is it to have a social media presence?

  • What if I get trolled?

  • Why would anyone want to hear from me?

Scientists are increasingly embracing social media in their professional lives. This webinar is an introduction to the popular social media platforms for science communicators and how to use them to your advantage. From hashtags to trolls, this webinar will introduce you to using social media to your advantage as an earth scientist to build your network, share your science and get noticed.

This will be an interactive webinar so please come along with your questions and experiences of social media!

Webinar 2: Presenting Online!

Thu 8 October 2020 12:00pm AEDT, 11.00am AEST (Brisbane), 11.30am ACDT (Adelaide), 9.00am AWST (Perth).

Our presenter is Dr Sandra McLaren, School of Earth Sciences, University of Melbourne. Sandra is a geologist with broad interests and research experience in understanding the evolution of the continental crust. She is currently a Senior Lecturer in the School of Earth Sciences at the University of Melbourne. Sandra’s research interests are largely focused on the long-term geological evolution of the Australian continent from the Proterozoic to the present day.

This webinar will discuss some of the challenges, and potential solutions, to presenting your science online.
Presenting online is very different to presenting in person in some ways and much the same in others. For example, a clear and succinct message will remain the key thing you need to communicate. But strategies for engagement become more important without the audience cues you would receive in a face to face presentation. Technology is also a challenge, there are many options and the choice can be bewildering.

Join this session to discuss some ideas and approaches for your upcoming GESSS presentation!
